What is so special about independent pet retail?

Victor Santucci, owner of Garden State Pet Center (an IndiePet member), wrote a great blog sharing why his store celebrates Neighborhood Pet Store Day in a big way and how pet owners/parents/shoppers and their communities benefit from from independent business owners, particularly for pet food and supplies. You can read his entire post (and we suggest you do, it has some great information in it) but we really want to call out this particular quote because it may be something that those shopping for pet food and supplies don't realize:

THE INDEPENDENT PET STORE IS DIFFERENT

An independent pet store isn't simply a smaller version of a big-box pet store.

We're fundamentally different.

At an independent pet store, the person deciding what goes on the shelf may be standing behind the counter.

That changes everything.

We're able to ask:

• Do we believe in this product?

• Would we feed it to our own pets?

• Does it solve a real problem?

• Are the ingredients and sourcing consistent with our standards?

• Does the company stand behind its products?

• Is there something better available?

A product doesn't automatically earn shelf space simply because it has a huge advertising budget or happens to be one of the most recognizable names in the pet industry.

Independent retailers have the freedom to say no.

And that's important.

It's important because as someone who shops for pet food and supplies, you can have the confidence that your local indie retailer has invested time and resources into selecting high quality products and has the expertise to help you find what's best for your pets and you.
